I am sad to report that Shirley Skelcher died peacefully on Friday 30th April , with her daughters Clare and Angela by her side.

Many members will have met her last on the occasion of the dedication of the seat to her husband Barrie : it sits on the west balcony overlooking the river.

Shirley and Barrie were members of Slaughden Sailing Club since the early days of the club and were always active members- helping and organizing building works and events and Shirley was frequently seen helping in the Galley as well as supporting Barrie's activities.

Sailing- they sailed most of the time in the River Alde joining in with all the picnics in their motor boat- with other members on board, but also spent time on the French canals exploring.

Shirley, who was a long term resident of Leiston, had always taken a keen interest in sport, had been a nursery school teacher, a librarian and Brown Owl with the Leiston Brownie Pack as well as being a keen gardener and wildlife advocate.

In the last few years Shirley and her daughters have enjoyed visiting SSC to sit on Barrie's seat and view the river scenery and wildlife, and we hope that Clare, Angela, Mary and the grandchildren will continue to do so.

Our thoughts are with the family at this time.

Should anyone wish to contact the family Angela's number is 01728 830949 or by e mail: a_skelcher@hotmail.com
