RNLI Fundrasier - Dawn to Dusk sail we are also launching the Cardboard Boat Challenge

On the 27th July, the day of the RNLI Fundraiser with the Dawn to Dusk sail we are also launching the Cardboard Boat Challenge.

If you are interested in having a go please see the rules below and please let me (kathypage2000@gmail.com) know if you are planning on entering so I can get an idea of numbers.

There is no fee to enter. You just need to have your boat made of cardboard at the club by 2:30 on the 27th July ready to launch it in the creek at 3.

The Cardboard Boat Challenge Rules

Objective

To design and build a cardboard boat that will float with a single person on board.

Prizes will be awarded in 4 categories

The boat that stays afloat the longest
The boat the travels the furthest
The most stylish Boat
Ingenuity shown in its design

Any boat that doesn't follow the rules below will be disqualified apart from the Ingenuity category where cheating is not only allowed but encouraged.

Construction

Vessels should be constructed for the most part in cardboard or paper. Old packing cases, boxes, cardboard tubes and old Amazon bags are all acceptable. Glue, staples and adhesive tape in small quantities are permissible, but may not be used to form a water tight sheath.

Propulsion

This must be of manual means either by begged borrowed or stolen paddles, oars, old dinner plates or likewise equipment. Any form of mechanical propulsion is not allowed, neither, petrol, diesel, electricity, nuclear, steam, or similar will be allowed. Towing is also not permitted.

Weather and hazards

In the event of inclement weather umbrellas may be employed but not used as a method of gaining advantage neither should any other form of sail be employed. If the wind is too strong the event will be postponed.

Paint and coatings

Neither paint or other substances may be used to form a water repellent coating to your craft. Please also don't use anything that could contaminate the water.

Passenger

The passenger can be any age or size but they must be human.
They also must wear a PFD at all times and be suitably dressed for getting wet as they almost certainly will end up swimming.

The Build

The building can be done prior to the event and the craft delivered to the club or building can be done on the premises. Boats need to be ready for check in at 2:30 with the launch to take place from 3:00.

Clearing Up.

Please make sure all material from your boat is removed from the water at the end of the event
