SSC Commodore's Blog - January 2024

To those of you who weren't able to be at the Arctic Antic on New Year's Day and partake in the delicious soup and turkey sandwich lunch provided by our new Social Secretary, Kathy and her team of helplers, a belated Happy New Year from your Commodore.

Although this can be a very quiet and somewhat depressing time of year for many of us, behind the scenes members of your Committee have been beavering away and we now have a fully functional and very attractive looking new galley which we hope will enable us to cater for many more social gatherings in the coming months and years, such as we have all enjoyed in the past. As the generations have moved on, so have our expectations for kitchen equipment, and we now have, not a moment too soon, a dishwasher for use after such events. In the olden days, I am told, members used to enjoy the communal activity of washing up after social events, but times have moved on, and personally I would much rather spend time chatting with fellow members over a glass of wine than stand for hours up to my elbows in lukewarm, greasy water, and from now on this won't be necessary!

A great deal of thought, planning and frantic telephoning has gone into this project and I would like to express my gratitude in particular to Dawn Samuels for all her hard work in liaising with Scottish Power (what a shower!), Wickes the kitchen suppliers, kitchen fitters and the electricians and to Chris Halder also for the onerous task of trying to communicate with Scottish Power so that we could have our nice new, and hopefully safer, fuse board. Thanks are also due to Wickes who kindly donated not just two ovens but also the flooring on hearing that the order was to be for a DIY sailing club with close ties to the local community. Well done Dawn!!

The new galley has been fitted out with great attention to detail, and we would therefore be grateful if you would kindly read and adhere to the guidance notes and rules for usage so that it remains an asset to the club for as long as the last one did.

A clubhouse such as ours will always need to be looked after in order to preserve it for the future, and work continues by members of the Committee and kind volunteers to look into such problems as leaky windows, slippery decking, dodgy doors, etc, and I encourage all members to take part in any working party days as they are announced: they are great fun and usually benefit from some form of free food and drink, and in a DIY club such as ours form the basis of enjoyable fellowship with likeminded folk.

Work continues on our calendar of events for 2024 and please see the Club's Facebook page and website for details of these as they are firmed up during the next couple of months. Suggestions and requests are always welcome but depend on people also proposing dates for such events do please get involved! Kathy has some exciting ideas for social events during the coming year and I suspect some of these may prove to be very popular, so get in early to guarantee a ticket!

We're now off to start work on fitting a new galley in our boat before the season starts I dare say it won't be quite so stylish as our Club's!
