SOS from Maldon Yacht Club

Published 09:35 on 27 Feb 2020

After 70 years in the riverside town of Maldon, Essex, Maldon Yacht Club have been issued with an eviction notice by the District Council, effective March 2020. In spite of the grandiose name MYC is a small, friendly, inexpensive dinghy-sailing & kayaking club, the only one of its kind within walking distance of the town centre. It has been at its present location at the end of Maldon Promenade for over 40 years. The members, aged 9 to 90 years, enjoy a healthy activity which is in harmony with the surrounding environment of saltings, mud and a tidal river, all within a Marine Conservation Zone.

The Council wish to evict us in order to raise extra revenue by siting more 'out of character' visitor attractions in the form of beach huts, imported sand & a toilet block. No alternative site has been offered, leaving us with no choice but to disband. Please help us to encourage the Council to reconsider their plans & grant us a new lease with a tenure of 10 years. This would enable us to work with them over time & perhaps plan for a mutually beneficial future.
